Large and simple pumpkin outlines

Large printable pumpkin outline template filling a full page, with a stem and ribbed lines

The large pumpkin outline fills a whole page, with the classic ribbed shape and a stem. It’s big enough for toddlers to color with chunky crayons or paint with a sponge. The simple outline on the next page has no inner lines, which makes it easier to cut out and trace onto construction paper, felt, or cardboard.

12 ways to use pumpkin outline templates

  1. Coloring page. The large outline works as a coloring page. Let kids make it any color, from orange to rainbow polka dots.
  2. Paper plate pumpkin. Trace the simple outline onto orange paper, cut it out, and glue it to a paper plate with a green paper stem.
  3. Jack-o’-lantern faces with no knife. Cut out the face pieces from black paper and glue them onto a paper pumpkin. It gives kids a carved look without any carving.
  4. Painting stencil. Lay the plain outline on paper and sponge-paint around it, then lift it off to reveal a pumpkin shape. For real pumpkins, see our pumpkin painting ideas for kids.
  5. Fall garland. Cut out the small pumpkins, acorns, and leaves, punch a hole in each, and string them on yarn.
  6. Size sorting game. Cut out the round, tall, wide, and mini pumpkins and sort them from biggest to smallest.
  7. Counting pumpkin patch. Number the small pumpkins 1 to 6 and match each one to the same number of stickers.
  8. Thankful pumpkin. Write one thing your child is thankful for on each small pumpkin and stick them on a door in November.
  9. Play dough mat. Slide the large outline into a sheet protector and fill it with play dough “seeds” and a stem.
  10. Cutting practice. Start with the medium pumpkins, which have smooth, gentle curves. Our pre-writing tracing pages include a cutting page too.
  11. Bat and pumpkin window. Tape cut-out bats and pumpkins to a window for an easy Halloween display.
  12. Leaf rubbing frame. Trace the leaf templates, then place real leaves underneath and rub with a crayon.

Cutting the templates by age

  • Under 3: a grown-up does the cutting. Toddlers color, stick, and glue.
  • Ages 3–4: child-safe scissors with the large and medium pumpkins, with a grown-up close by.
  • Ages 4–5 and up: the small pumpkins, acorns, and face pieces, which have tighter curves and points.

Keep the carving knives for grown-ups. Paper face pieces, painting, and stickers give kids the jack-o’-lantern fun safely.

How to print the pumpkin templates

  • Fit to page: turn on “Fit to page” or “Shrink oversized pages” so the whole outline prints.
  • Cardstock for tracing: if you’ll trace around a template many times, print it on cardstock and cut it out once.
  • Black and white is fine: every page is line art, so it uses very little ink.
  • Bigger or smaller: change the print scale (for example 150% or 50%) to resize any pumpkin.
